It’s damp, drizzling and foggy. The trailhead to the bowl is quiet. No people hiking ahead. Despite the cool, wet weather, it’s the perfect day to venture to the mountain lake tucked behind The Beehive in Acadia National Park. In rainy weather, many of the park trails tend to be […]
Spring is finally here. It’s time to get out and explore Acadia National Park once again. The loop road is open and you can also make your way to the top of Cadillac Mountain. If you are journeying to the top of Cadillac Mountain, be prepared for some spring winds. Last […]
By Lynn Gregorski-Bosi and Emily Muise 1.) It’s not in Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor Airport AKA BHB is in Trenton, Maine and only a few miles from Mount Desert Island, home of Bar Harbor. 2.) Bar Harbor Airport is a small airport with a single terminal. The airport has 3-6 […]
In December of last year, the Northeast was flash frozen by the Polar Vortex. Downeast Maine wasn’t spared. The sub-zero chill and freezing rains encapsulated Ellsworth’s Harbor Park and Marina with a wintery crust of ice and snow. Photos courtesy of Lynn Gregorski
It’s November. Temperatures are dropping throughout New England, but the folks in Bar Harbor, Maine are celebrating with Pajama Day! This festive celebration happens the second Saturday in November and on Pajama Day the early bird really does get the worm.
If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing spot to just chill, check out the Ellsworth Marina. It’s a great spot to sip your afternoon coffee, watch the sunset or just BE.
The Wooodlawn Museum and home in Ellsworth is offering a Farmer’s market Sunday’s from 11-2. http://woodlawnmuseum.com/site/index.php Look for the owners of Horsepower Farm (Penobscot, ME). These folks do all their farming under horsepower. The horses pull all the equipment for cultivating and farming. http://www.ruralheritage.com/apprenticeship/intern_me.htm
Bargain Hunting One of the best things about visiting Downeast Maine is hunting for bargains at Marden’s, the L.L. Bean Outlet and Reny’s. All three stores are located in Ellsworth. Marden’s is a deep discount outlet store and the great finds are all about timing. This author found a DKNY […]
During my many hikes on Acadia's trails, I pass quite a few solo hikers. Everyone has a story. Some hikers I've spoken with have told me they wanted to get away from the kids or that none of their family wants to hike. This summer morning I was looking for a hike that was short, challenging and that would be busy, since I too would hike solo. In the book Best Easy Day Hikes, I found the Flying Mountain Trail. The trail is on the west side of Somes Sound and has a short summit of 284 feet. The trail loop is only 1.2 miles. So off I went.
This loop trail is a short hike from the Beech Mountain trailhead at the top of Beech Mountain. The hike is short but fairly steep up boulders and stone ledges. It’s more exhilarating than strenuous. Side trails include Canada Cliffs and the Echo Lake trail.
Picture this. You’ve been hiking for a few hours. You are no longer sure you are on the right trail and ahead of you lies yet another steep incline covered with iron rails. You have a map, but could use more help to figure out exactly where you are. […]
A favorite of ours for dining on the way out to or back from the Schoodic Penisula is Ruth and Wimpy’s on Route 1 in Hancock. This super casual lobster pound has a vast menu of burgers, seafood and pies. Try the fried pimento stuffed olives for a change of […]
On the road into downtown Blue Hill, on the sharp curve, slow down so you don’t miss my fav place for a lobsta’ roll. The Fish Net offers an all local catch… from fish, shrimp and lobster to crab cakes and scallops, all locally caught. So place your order, grab […]
This small beach is tucked along the roadway in Surry. Though there is only a few feet of gravel between the road and water, this pretty spot offers crystal clear water for swimming and a great view of the Acadia Mountains.
Just getting to Little Hunters Beach is like taking a trek into fairyland. A trail leads you through a moss-covered landscape with protruding twisted roots and quaint wooden bridges. To reach Hunters Beach, take Route 3 heading south out of Bar Harbor and travel about 6 miles. Once you pass Blackwoods […]

If you can leave the Quietside without buying one of their gigantic homemade cookies, macaroons or a slice of their mile high pie, then you have enormous willpower. The staff is always friendly. The atmosphere is super casual and you won’t leave still feeling hungry. 360 Main St Southwest Harbor, ME […]
Yesterday we hiked the Pemetic Mountain Trail. This is a long, strenuous climb goes up 1234 feet through steep, rocky terrain. The views from the top were amazing. Pemetic is the fourth highest peak in Acadia and from the top, you can see Jordan Pond all the way out to […]
Friends of Acadia Explorer recently went to the Thirsty Whale and got the Fisherman’s Platter. Word is it was a meal for two. The Thirsty Whale is open all year and recommended by locals for the good prices and portions. Try the lobster roll and chowder special. Located right […]
